William Norman Payne

Charlie's youngest brother, referred to in the diaries as 'Norman', 'Nor', or 'N'. Norman was born on 30 January 1889 in Westminster. He served in the Army as a Clerk during the First World War in the 1/4th Battalion of the Essex Regiment (regimental number 37165), seeing active service as part of the Egypt Expeditionary Force in Gaza, and elsewhere in the Middle East. During his service overseas he acquired malaria which continued to recur later in life. After the war, he married Grace Mary Stedman on 2 September 1922 at St Saviour's Church, Croydon and the couple had one son, Raymond Norman Payne. Norman worked as an inurance clerk and died in Camberwell on 26 January 1960.
