'Slocombe' was probably a former pupil of Emanuel School during the time that Charlie also attended the School. Lunchtime meetings with Slocombe suggest that the two young men both worked in the City of London. Charlie's diaries record that they met up several times between January and March 1903 and once in 1904 (in October).
The Emanuel School Magazine between 1897 and 1899 makes frequent mention of an "L.M.Slocombe". In 1897 Slocombe "satisfied the examiners" in the Cambridge Local examination, Christmas 1996; at the same time, Charlie took the College of Preceptors examination, achieving a Class III, division 2 pass (possibly helping to explain why Charlie would sometimes refer to himself in correspondence as a 'duffer'!). Slocombe appears to have been a capable sportsman. In 1897 he was playing for the School Second XI football (soccer) team, occasionally getting a game with the First XI. By 1899 Slocombe was captaining the First XI. In 1898 Slocombe came first in the 'throwing the cricket ball' competition in the school sports but later that year broke his arm during a football match. He was also a good high-jumper. There are no indications from the school magazine that Charlie shared Slocombe's abilities on the sports' field. Slocombe left Emanuel School at Christmas 1899.
